Writers come from many different backgrounds and abilities, but one thing that they all have in common is their desire to succeed, often in a very tough, competitive market. How can you build integrity as a freelance writer?
Learn from Your Mistakes
Freelance writers who believe that they have learned all they need to in order to perfect their skill are often the ones in the greatest need of help. All freelance writers make mistakes, including some very serious mistakes from time to time, but the lessons that are drawn from those mistakes can help them to improve and avoid making those same mistakes again in future. The result is a writer with greater focus, drive, passion and integrity, which are all key ingredients to success.
Accept Constructive Criticism
Constructive criticism can be hard to take and even harder to apply, but a freelance writer with integrity will not be so quick to dismiss constructive criticism that is given to them by a fellow writer, an editor or by someone else who looks over their work. They will carefully evaluate the advice given, pick out key points that they can apply and then put it into practice so that they improve in their writing. Writing is a craft that requires a lot of hard work and revision before it is ready to be submitted for publication.
Always Submit Your Best Work
A good writer will not be satisfied with a haphazard effort or a last minute dash to meet a deadline the day before submission. They will always work hard to produce their very best work in a timely manner, whether they are submitting an article, poem, press release, a manuscript, or some other piece of work.
Always Check Your Facts
Freelance writers need to check their facts for accuracy. Check sources and ask yourself if they are reliable and credible, or if they could be flawed. For example, when writing on important historical facts, include the correct dates, times that events took place and do not mix up historical characters. It is surprising how many people will write about a subject such as the Tudors and mix up Henry VIII’s wives! A writer who presents inaccurate information as fact will quickly lose their credibility and their audience.
Freelance writers continue to learn and to grow over time, whether that involves learning from their past writing mistakes, accepting constructive criticism or learning how to submit their very best work that they will feel proud to put their names to. A good writer will also make sure they check their facts so that they are presenting accurate information to their readers. Taking these issues into consideration can help writers to build integrity and to continue to improve in their careers.
